The atheist cares little about playing 'the game' or its rules. In fact, I think many atheists regard religion as just that: A silly game with silly rules and rituals that must be adhered to in order to appease a God whose existence is ambiguous in the first place.
Many people do not wish to play these games, nor care for them, and are greatly annoyed by advocates of 'the game' who insist its rules should also be the laws of the land.
I don't think most atheists want to care about religion, but religious folks force the issue by trying to ram their religion down everyone's throats.
I've seen plenty of religious folks screaming at people on a street corner with a megaphone or accosting them with religious literature demanding they accept God and Jesus. I have yet to be yelled at in the street by an atheist demanding I denounce God.
